PEMBROKE – West Bladen grad Abbey Walters walloped a home run Friday, but her UNC-Pembroke Lady Braves were swept in a Peach Belt Conference double-header by nationally ranked North Georgia.
The Lady Nighthawks, the defending Peach Belt champions and the No. 3 team in Division II , took Friday’s opener 12-3. Walters raked a single through the left side in the fourth inning and scored the second UNC-Pembroke run.
Walters who was sidelined for a couple of games last weekend with a knee injury returned to the circle in the second game and kept the Lady Braves close until a 4-run seventh inning stretched the North Georgia lead to 8-3.
The senior righthander struck out six and now has a 9-5 record. The Bladenboro native slammed her eighth home run of the season over the leftfield fence in the first inning to tie the game 1-1.
Walters batted 2-6 with a pair of singles in Thursday’s double-header against Coker and is batting .455 for the season.
UNC-Pembroke, now 17-16, will host Young Harris Sunday in a Peach Belt double-header that begins at 1 p.m.
