The rain did not stop the Bladen County Board of Commissioners from holding a special meeting on Monday evening. The topic for the special meeting was to discuss the county’s budget.

Mike Jackson, Chair of the Bladen County Animal Control Advisory Board, presented a needs evaluation showing the local animal shelter is in need of two more shelter attendants. Jackson said, “We are falling behind on our responsibilities at the shelter because we do not have enough help.”

The study Jackson presented was done free of charge to the county. The local shelter has maintained its certification even though it is really understaffed.

Jackson stated the shelter needs 2.6 more persons to meet the needs of the public. He said, “I am coming before you tonight asking you for two people that will be shelter attendants.” Animal Control Estimated Minimum Staffing formula 04242017

Sheriff Jim McVicker and Captain Jeff Singletary reiterated the staffing needs for the new correctional and law enforcement center. Memo to BoCC from Sheriff McVicker regarding detention center staffing levels 04182017

Greg Martin, Bladen County Manager presented the Fiscal Year Budget information during the meeting. Mentioned in the presentation were the 2017 strong tax property and sales tax collections, unexpected jail items and the sale of the County’s Home Health agency.

Priorities the manager mentioned for 2018: Public Safety, Employee Compensation and Capital and Non-Inventoriable Items.

The sales tax expansion was discussed. According to the report the funds from the tax expansion is limited to funding Public Schools, Community Colleges and Economic Development.

The board also set a date to further discuss the Mental Health needs in Bladen County. The special meeting will be held on May 22nd at 4:30 p.m.
