For the first time during this current heat wave the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for Tuesday in Bladen County.

Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 degrees are expected Tuesday, according to the NWS. The warning begins at 10 a.m. and continues until 7 p.m. The high temperature Tuesday in Bladen County is expected to reach 100 degrees.

The advisory also covers Robeson, Columbus, Pender, New Hanover and Brunswick counties along with several counties in northeast South Carolina.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat-related illnesses and the National Weather Service recommends people drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, if possible, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Also, make sure outside pets and livestock have easy access to water and to well ventilated and shaded areas.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency and you are advised to call 9-1-1.
