Elizabethtown, N.C. – We are well into June, and here in the South, June is the beginning of hurricane season. As we have all experienced, hurricanes are powerful and destructive storms that affect communities and individuals. Being well-prepared and taking proactive measures before a hurricane hits are key to getting through the aftermath of the storm.
Here are a few essential tips and strategies for hurricane preparedness:
1. Stay informed: Keep track of weather updates and warnings issued by local authorities and meteorological agencies. Stay tuned to official sources of information to receive timely alerts about potential hurricanes and necessary precautions.

2. Create an emergency kit: Assemble an emergency kit that includes essential supplies such as non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, and important documents. Be sure to include provisions for your pets as well.
3. Secure your property: Protect your home by installing storm shutters (if possible), reinforcing doors and windows, and securing outdoor objects that could become hazardous projectiles in high winds. It’s a good idea to take pictures of your home – inside and out – and items inside your home as well as any valuable possessions/structures outside.
4. Evacuation plan: Develop a clear evacuation plan with multiple routes and make sure all family members are aware of the plan. Determine in advance where you will go if you need to evacuate; and make arrangements for transportation and accommodations.
5. Communication plan: Establish a communication plan with family members and loved ones, including designated meeting points and emergency contacts. Ensure that everyone knows how to contact each other in case of separation during the hurricane.
Many of these strategies can be prepared well before a hurricane warning is ever issued. Taking the time to prepare now can make all the difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of yourself, your family, and your community in the event of a hurricane. Stay safe and stay prepared!
