Justin P. Hern, known to many as Trooper Hern, has dedicated his career to public service. As a North Carolina Highway Trooper, he embodies the values of integrity, compassion, and diligence. Assigned to cover nearly 1,000 square miles in Bladen County, Trooper Hern takes pride in being the sole trooper in such a vast area.

Trooper Hern’s journey into law enforcement began with four years as a deputy with the Columbus County Sheriff’s Department from 2011 to 2014.

During this time, he gained valuable experience and forged connections with deeply respected troopers. Inspired by their dedication, he decided to pursue a career as a trooper, graduating from the 150th Basic School in 2020 after completing his service as an infantryman in the 82nd Airborne Division from 2014 to 2019.

For Trooper Hern, the appeal of his current role lies in the freedom it offers and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives, even in challenging situations. “I try to put myself in their shoes,” he says, emphasizing the importance of treating everyone with respect, regardless of the circumstances.

Beyond his professional achievements, Trooper Hern finds fulfillment in his family life, cherishing moments with his wife and two sons. He values the chance to serve his country and state, viewing each shift as an opportunity to prevent tragedies and assist those in need.

Trooper Hern enjoys outdoor activities like hunting, fishing, shooting, and staying fit through regular workouts when he’s not on duty. His dedication to his community and his unwavering commitment to service make him a respected figure in Bladen County.
