Bladen County Animal ShelterYour pet can get in trouble in minutes in hot weather.

In just a few minutes on a summer day the inside of a car can get to 140 degrees.  A pet should never be left in a vehicle during the summer heat.

Your pet needs access to shade and clean water. Water left in the sun will get too hot to drink, so place water in the shade and make sure your pet can always get to it easily without tipping it over.

This is an important time to stay on top of fleas and ticks. There are a number of great products you can get from your vet or feed stores.

Heartworm prevention is necessary throughout the year;  speak to your veterinarian to begin a preventative program for your pet.

Most dog bites involve intact animals (animals that are not spayed or neutered), and most “problem behavior,” including roaming and fighting in males, is directly related to mating instincts. Spaying and neutering your pet is one of the most important things you can do for your pet, to help you enjoy your pet, and for your community.

Rabies can be found in wild animals in Bladen County.  It is state law that all dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies once they turn 4 months of age.

There’s no time like now to get your pet “fixed” and vaccinated against rabies.

Low-income families who want to get their pets spayed or neutered at A Shelter Friend’s monthly low-income clinic can call 910-645-2297 for information and sign-up.

Share this number with your friends and neighbors who are producing unwanted litters of puppies and kittens – your community will thank you.
