The pilot of a small plane that crashed Friday in Columbus County has been identified. According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol the victim was 76 year old Gene Pierce of Chinquapin in Duplin County.
The small plane he was piloting was apparently having engine problems when it crashed near Riegelwood.
Pierce was reportedly flying to Wallace. His plane began having problems and he attempted to return to the airport, but it crashed. Pierce is believed to have died from the impact.
The FAA is investigating.
