hurricaneA rare January hurricane has formed in the Atlantic Ocean but there is no immediate threat to land, according to National Weather Service Meteorologist Dave Loewenthal.

Hurricane Alex is located at 31.5 N, 28.4 W and moving north-northeast at 20 miles per hour, with maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour according to Loewenthal.

“The last time we had one in January was in 1938,” said Leowenthal.

He said coastal areas of North Carolina could possibly see a slight swell from the storm on Friday. Loewenthal said in Bladen County we will see rain in the afternoon.

Loewenthal said in order for a hurricane to form it needs warm waters and really winds in the upper atmosphere.

A hurricane warning has been issued for the Azores, according to the National Hurricane Center in Coral Gables, FL.
