Three Things to KnowGood morning! 3 things to know for Tuesday, September 22

1. It was 70 years ago today that the Cape Fear River crested at Huske Lock and Dam near the Bladen/Cumberland line at a record 75.5 feet, according to the National Weather Service. It’s the highest crest measured at the lock by almost 15 feet. It was caused by what was known as the 1945 Homestead hurricane. The National Hurricane Center didn’t start naming hurricanes until 1953.

2. No measurable rainfall for the past nine days recorded in Bladen Online’s rain gauge located in the Cape Owen Manor subdivision near Dublin. It’s the fourth 9-day stretch without rain this year. The other dates were June 11-19, July 5-13 and July 29-Aug. 6. Based on the forecast, there’s a good chance to reach double digits.

3. “The Emergency at the Bases” softball tournament is scheduled Saturday at the Bladen County Park on U.S. 701. Public safety teams from law enforcement, fire and emergency services are expected to compete. Opening ceremony is at 8 a.m. There will be food, bounce houses, vendors and more.
