1. Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887. Congress made the first Monday in September a legal holiday in 1894.

2. In the 1800s, many Americans worked 70 hours or more per week, says the Economic History Association. Many Americans worked from first light to dark. Seems like some of us are returning to those days.

3. The Adamson Act passed in 1916 established an eight-hour workday for interstate railroad workers, and time and a half pay for overtime, according to Encyclopedia.com. It was enacted in response to a pending strike by the major brotherhoods of railway workers.
