A staff report

Senior Trooper Terrell P. Shepherd of the North Carolina Highway Patrol (NCHP) has been significantly impacting his community and state. With five years of dedicated service under his belt, Trooper Shepherd’s journey with the SHP began after graduating from the 148th Basic School in 2019. His early years were spent serving in Chowan County, but in May 2022, he transferred to Bladen County, bringing his commitment and professionalism closer to home.

Trooper Shepherd’s childhood admiration for the professionalism and sharpness of troopers initially inspired him to pursue a career in law enforcement. “I’ve always wanted to help people and to serve my community and state,” he explains, reflecting on the deep-rooted desire that propelled him into law enforcement.

One memorable incident in his career involved assisting a stranded motorist who had run out of gas and had no money to continue his journey. Trooper Shepherd’s act of kindness not only helped the man reach his destination but also positively changed his perception of law enforcement. “He was very grateful and thanked me for my assistance,” Shepherd recalls, highlighting how such interactions impact public trust and confidence in the police.

Trooper Shepherd is motivated by the gratitude and acknowledgment he receives from the community. “The different people that approach me daily to say thanks for everything that we do really makes a difference. It’s the younger kids that look up to us that keep me motivated,” he shares, emphasizing the importance of positive role models in law enforcement.

When he’s not on duty, Trooper Shepherd enjoys spending quality time with his family, staying active with workouts, and occasionally indulging in his passion for fishing. His balanced approach to life and work enhances his effectiveness as a trooper and enriches his well-being.

Senior Trooper Shepherd’s story is an example of the positive impact that dedicated law enforcement officers can have on their communities. His commitment to service continues to inspire his peers and the public, reinforcing troopers’ crucial role in building safer and more connected communities.
