1884 – Dow Jones publishes its first stock index, the Dow Jones Transportation Average.

1898 – American troops, en route to the Philippines on the SS China, raise the American flag on Wake Island.

1913 – Confederate veterans at the Great Reunion of 1914 reenact Pickett’s Charge. Upon reaching the high-water mark of the Confederacy they are met by the outstretched hands of friendship from Union survivors.

1928 – Harry Ferguson granted a patent for his three-point hitch for tractors.

1938 – President Franklin Roosevelt dedicates the Eternal Light Memorial and lights the eternal flame at Gettysburg Battlefield.

1944 – Oriole Park, then a minor league baseball stadium, burns down in Baltimore. Speculation is the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette.

1947 – A record 252,288 people pass through Grand Central Station in New York City.

1958 – “Andy Williams Show” premieres on ABC. It also later runs on CBS and NBC.

1966 – Atlanta Braves pitcher Tony Cloninger becomes the first National League player and only pitcher to hit two grand slams in a Major League Baseball game in Atlanta’s 17-3 win over the San Francisco Giants.

1968 – 41 degrees is the lowest temperature ever recorded in Cleveland in July.

1973 – Brothers Gaylord (Hall of Fame) and Jim Perry (3-time All Star) face each other for the only time in a Major League Baseball game with the Detroit Tigers beating the Cleveland Indians 5-4 and Gaylord charged with the loss.

1978 – Supreme Court rules 5-4 that the Federal Communications Commission had a right to reprimand New York radio station WBAI for broadcasting George Carlin’s “Filthy Words.”

1984 – Supreme Court rules that civic organization Jaycees may be forced to admit women as members.

1986 – President Ronald Reagan presides over the relighting of the renovated Statue of Liberty.

1989 – Movie “Batman” set a record of 10 days for quickest $100 million in ticket sales.

1997 – Mississippi becomes first state to settle tobacco suit.

2007 – “Just Got Started Lovin’ You” single released by James Otto. It’s the Billboard Song of the Year in 2008.

2018 – Cardi B becomes first female rapper to get two number one Billboard hits with “I Like It” with Bad Bunny and J Balvin.

2020 – Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game, planned to be hosted on July 14 by the Los Angeles Dodgers, is cancelled due to government restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2023 – Hottest global temperature ever recorded as average global temperature tops 17.01 degrees Celsius (62.6 Fahrenheit). The previous record 16.92 degrees Celsius occurred August 13, 2016.
