1908 – First federal workmen’s compensation law approved.

1913 – John McGraw joins Fred Clarke, Cap Anson, Frank Selee and Connie Mack as Major League Baseball managers who have won 1,000 games.

1922 – Completed Lincoln Memorial dedicated by US Chief Justice and former president William Howard Taft in front of 50,000 people.

1925 – Peter DePaolo became first man to average over 100 mph while winning the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

1938 – Walter Piston’s dance work, “The Incredible Flutist,” written for the Boston Pops Orchestra, which premiered it with Arthur Fiedler conducting.

1942 – Satchel Paige pitches 5 innings to defeat the Dizzy Dean All-Stars 8-1.

1956 – Bus boycott begins in Tallahassee, Florida.

1958 – Unidentified soldiers killed in World War II and Korean War buried in Arlington.

1961 – Roger Maris hits his 10th and 11th home run during his record-breaking 61 home run season.

1964 – The Beatles’ “Love Me Do” single goes #1 in the United States.

1966 – 300 US airplanes bomb North Vietnam.

1970 – Baseball All-Star voting is returned to fans.

1980 – J.M.W. Turner’s painting “Juliet & Her Nurse” sells for $6.4 million.

1985 – Stanley Cup Final, Northlands Coliseum, Edmonton, Alberta: Edmonton Oilers take back-to-back titles, beating the Philadelphia Flyers 8-3 for a 4-1 series victory. Wayne Gretzky and Jari Kurri each post a goal and 2 assists.

1990 – Dow Jones average hits a record 2,878.56.

1998 – A magnitude 6.6 earthquake hits northern Afghanistan, killing up to 5,000 people.

2008 – Stacy Lewis helps the United States team win women’s golf’s Curtis Cup, going 5-0 in the matches, and turns professional immediately afterward.

2017 – Singer and actress Olivia Newton-John reveals her breast cancer has returned after 25 years.

2019 – Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards signs new anti-abortion law, making it the fifth southern state to ban abortion when fetal heartbeat is detected.

2020 – SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket launches carrying the Dragon capsule from Cape Canaveral to the International Space Station. First private company to launch astronauts into space.
