Bladen County Youth RallyBy: Erin Smith

An afternoon punctuated with rain, sleet and the occasional snowflake couldn’t dampen spirits in the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church PAC building Sunday afternoon as volunteers gathered to begin making final plans for the first annual Youth Rally for Bladen County. The rally is planned for Sunday, March 6, at 5 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Middle School Gym. The theme for the rally is “My Story.”

Cheryl West opened the meeting by telling volunteers the biggest hurdle to making the Youth Rally successful will be the transportation and logistics. West told the group that Chuck and Kelly Heustess have agreed to create a map of the county for use in planning the routes the church vans and buses would need to travel to provide transportation. West said there may also need to areas designated as pick-up and drop-off locations for youth in some areas of the county.

She announced that the church youth group that brings the largest number guests with them to the rally will receive a $200 prize. There will also gift bags that will be given to each of the youth who attend the rally. There have also been donations of items including bracelets that will be used as door prizes.

West also said the list of speakers has grown. The list of speakers now includes Real Word Outdoors’ David Pait, Steven Cox, Shaquandra McCray has agreed to share her story, and Deena Freeman has agreed to serve as the emcee. Also, Nick Peevey, Caitlyn Davis and Alyssa Belle have agreed to sing.

Members also discussed how best to reach out to churches who have not attended the planning sessions to let them know about the event and ask they share the information with their congregations and youth groups.

Anyone wishing to volunteer for the Youth Rally can attend the next meeting which is planned for Sunday, Feb. 14, at 3:30 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Presbyterian Church PAC building.
