Bladen Community College (BCC) isn’t just about traditional semesters. Every summer, the college transforms into a hive of activity with its diverse summer camp programs designed to spark curiosity and ignite young minds. These engaging programs offer a gateway to learning, exploration, and even a glimpse into potential future careers.

BCC’s summer camps cater to a wide range of interests and age groups, ensuring there’s something for every inquisitive mind. The ongoing youth summer camp exposes students to a smorgasbord of career paths, from the intricacies of nursing to the creative world of cosmetology and the fascinating science behind culinary arts. “We want them to explore different options and discover what ignites their passion,” says Karen Rideout, Community Enrichment Facilitator.

One of the standout programs is Kamp Kitchenology, a culinary camp designed to tantalize the taste buds and inspire future chefs. Geared towards students in grades 5-8, the camp is led by BCC’s very own Chef Dickerson. Under his expert guidance, campers not only learn essential kitchen skills like knife safety and proper food preparation but also delve into the world of healthy meal planning and budgeting for groceries. Imagine the excitement of mastering knife skills and whipping up delicious (and nutritious!) meals that will impress family and friends.

For fashion-conscious teens, the Just for Teens cosmetology camp provides a fun and informative introduction to the world of beauty. Taught by experienced instructors who are passionate about their craft, campers learn valuable skills like skincare routines, hair care basics, and even how to apply simple makeup techniques. This camp empowers teens to express themselves through their unique sense of style and fosters confidence in their appearance.

Looking for a shorter but equally enriching experience? BCC offers mini-camps focused on specific topics like natural hair care or summer hair essentials. Open to both teens and adults, these affordable ($15) sessions are a great way to gain valuable knowledge in a condensed format. Perhaps you’re a parent interested in learning how to care for your child’s natural hair, or maybe you’re an adult wanting to perfect your summer hair care routine – these mini-camps offer a convenient and targeted learning opportunity.

The BCC summer camp experience goes beyond just acquiring new skills. It’s about fostering a love for learning in a fun and engaging environment. The youth summer camp, for example, follows a structured daily routine that incorporates breakfast, engaging classes in various disciplines breaks for socialization, and even team-building activities. This structure provides a sense of familiarity and routine while allowing for exploration and discovery.

“It’s not just about academics,” Rideout emphasizes. “We want them to have fun, make new friends, and get a feel for what college life might be like.” By participating in these camps, students get a taste of the college environment, from attending classes in actual college classrooms to interacting with BCC’s dedicated faculty members. This exposure can spark an interest in pursuing higher education and open doors to a future filled with possibilities.

The success of these camps hinges on the dedication and passion of the instructors. BCC’s faculty members generously volunteer their time to create engaging lessons, share their expertise, and connect with younger generations. “Their passion for teaching is truly inspiring,” says Rideout. These instructors aren’t just educators; they become mentors, role models, and facilitators of learning, leaving a lasting impression on the young minds they shape.

Registration for most camps is done through the BCC website or by contacting the registrar’s office. Keep in mind that deadlines can vary, so it’s best to check early, especially for popular programs like the cosmetology camp.

For those new to BCC’s summer offerings, Rideout’s message is simple: “Relax and have fun! These camps are designed to be engaging and informative, a chance to make new friends, explore different possibilities, and maybe even discover a hidden talent or passion.”

BCC plans to continue these enriching summer programs year after year, so if you miss out this year, mark your calendars for registration which typically opens in February or March. As Rideout reminds us, BCC’s summer camps offer “different ways to engage and still have fun,” all while planting the seeds for a future filled with learning and endless possibilities.
