1900 – Having been annexed to the United States on August 12, 1898, Hawaii is constituted as an organized territory.

1916 – Democratic Convention convenes in St. Louis and Woodrow Wilson campaigns on the slogan “he kept out of the war.”

1922 – President Warren G. Harding is first president to use radio during dedication of the Francis Scott Key memorial in Baltimore.

1928 – Republican National Convention, meeting in Kansas City, nominates Herbert Hoover for president.

1933 – Major League Baseball’s Lou Gehrig and Joe McCarthy thrown out of the game and McCarthy suspended three games, but Gehrig isn’t, so he continues his streak at 1,249 consecutive games played.

1941 – Ground broken for Boeing Plant II (ex-AFLC Plant 13) in Wichita, Kansas.

1946 – Nat King Cole records “The Christmas Song,” written by Mel Torme and Bob Wells, for the first time.

1952 – Boston Braves pitcher Warren Spahn ties National League record held by Jim Whitney with 18 strikeouts against the Chicago Cubs in 15 innings.

1961 – 106 degrees, hottest temperature in San Francisco.

1967 – “The Steve Allen Comedy Hour” premieres on CBS-TV.

1972 – Tropical storm, later hurricane, Agnes forms over Yucatan Peninsula.

1973 – President Richard Nixon’s administration imposes a 60-day economy-wide price freeze, superseding Special Rule No. 1 for oil companies.

1984 – Southern Baptist Convention decided against allowing women clergy members.

1987 – Senior Tournament Players Championship Men’s Golf, Sawgrass Country Club: South African Gary Player wins by 1 stroke over Bruce Crampton and Chi Chi Rodriguez.

1991 – Space Shuttle STS 40, Columbia 12, lands.

1996 – Movie “Cable Guy” starring Jim Carrey is released.

2012 – The world’s first stem-cell assisted vein transplant is undertaken by Swedish doctors on a 10-year-old girl.

2013 – The United States government charges National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden with violating the Espionage Act and theft of government property.

2017 – United States Senate approves new sanctions against Russia as punishment for meddling in the 2016 election.

2021 – Heatwave event begins across western United States and Canadian provinces with Denver, Colorado at 101 degrees and Helena, Montana at 105 degrees.
