1865 – Union General Gordon Granger declares slaves are free in Texas which is now recognized as the date slavery ended and is celebrated as Juneteenth.

1910 – Father’s Day celebrated for the first time at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington.

1923 – Comic strip “Moon Mullins” debuts.

1934 – Federal Communications Commission (FCC) created.

1936 – German boxer Max Schmeling knocks out up-and-coming American heavyweight Joe Louis in 12 rounds at Yankee Stadium in New York.

1941 – President Franklin Roosevelt signs the Two Ocean Navy Expansion Act which increased the size of the United States Navy by 70%.

1944 – World War II: First day of the 2-day Battle of the Philippine Sea which saw United States naval forces defeat the Japanese fleet.
