On August 29, a wreath-laying ceremony at the historic gravesite of James Richardson, a significant part of the Bladen Patriot Militia, will commemorate the 240th anniversary of the Battle of Elizabethtown.

The Board of Harmony Hall Village in White Oak is inviting the public to join members for a wreath-laying ceremony at the old Purdie Cemetery on Sunday, August 29 at 5pm. The ceremony pays tribute to the heroes of 1781 whose actions aided American Independence at the Battle of Elizabethtown where a small, determined number of patriots banded together to permanently drive superior numbers of the Bladen Loyal Militia from the county’s seat of power.

The old Purdie Cemetery is located at 11456 NC Hwy 87W, Tar Heel across Hwy 87 from Purdie Methodist Church. Parking may involve walking some distance. Persons with limited mobility or who have questions should call 910-644-4144 in advance. Civic groups interested in participating or assisting with the event should call by August 15.  Lawn chairs are recommended. Compliance with local mandated COVID guidelines expected. The event is free.

Donations to support restoration and reopening of Harmony Hall, Richardson’s former residence, and the improvement of access to the Mountains-to-Sea Trail are greatly appreciated.
