1861 – Edward Clark became Governor of Texas, replacing Sam Houston, who is evicted from the office for refusing to take an oath of loyalty to the Confederacy (US Civil War)

1882 – US Senate ratifies treaty establishing the Red Cross.

1900 – American Baseball League officials meets in Chicago. Ban Johnson announces AL league will be Chicago White Stockings, Washington Senators, Milwaukee Brewers, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Blues, Boston Americans, Philadelphia Athletics and Baltimore Orioles.

1912 – Mrs. William Howard Taft plants 1st cherry tree in Washington, DC.
