Kyle’s Farm in Harrells was a hub of activity on Saturday as more than 50 volunteers gathered to pack meals for Rise Against Hunger. The volunteers, who were from various churches and the community, packed 20,088 meals which will be shipped to areas around the world impacted by natural or environmental disasters or extreme poverty.
Each meal bag contains a protein, dehydrated vegetables, rice, and a seasoning packet. Each meal bag is estimated to feed six people. As each set of 1,000 meals was completed a gong would sound and the Gym at Kyle’s Farm would erupt in cheers as the volunteers got closer to their goal.
Rise Against Hunger is based in Raleigh and does far more than just provide meals. The organization’s goal is to end hunger by the year 2030, according to Rise Against Hunger officials. The organization not only distributes meals, they also offer education to assist communities in learning how to produce their own food.
The volunteers were treated to lunch after they packaged and loaded the meals into the truck to be transported to the Rise Against Hunger warehouse to be shipped.
