Volunteers package meals for the hungry

Kyle’s Farm in Harrells was a hub of activity on Saturday as more than 50 volunteers gathered to pack meals for Rise Against Hunger. The volunteers, who were from various churches and the community, packed 20,088 meals which will be shipped to areas around the world impacted by natural or environmental disasters or extreme poverty. Each meal bag contains a protein, dehydrated vegetables, rice, and a seasoning packet. Each meal bag is estimated to feed six people. Fundraiser planned to assist church

By Erin Smith The Colly ECA is planning a fundraiser is planned to assist Evening Light Holiness Church with rebuilding their church. The fundraiser is planned for Friday, June 1, from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.at the Bladen County Cooperative Extension Office located at 450 Smith Circle in Elizabethtown. The Evening Light Holiness Church was located at 1371 Airport Road, Garland, and was destroyed in a devastating fire on December 12th, 2017. By Erin Smith Bladen County residents marked the National Day of Prayer on Thursday with two remembrances.  The first remembrance took place at 12 noon in front of the Elizabethtown Municipal Building by the flag poles. Three people turned out to pray for our nation, our state and our county. The theme for this year’s event was Unity.  Clara Adams led the prayer session in Elizabethtown. By: Charlotte Smith The Opioid Task Force has been trying to find new ways to offer treatment and support for addicts in Bladen County. Back in January, Bladen County Commissioner and Chairman of the task force, Charles Ray Peterson said he had received a letter from Albemarle Teen Challenge. Peterson explained to the group at the January meeting the members with Albermarle Teen Challenge was requesting a meeting with the Bladen County Opioid Task Force. East Bladen High School graduate, Isaac Keyshawn Monroe, passed away on Monday, April 9th from injuries sustained in a vehicle wreck on Airport Road in Elizabethtown. His funeral services are being provided by Johnson Funeral Home. New Light Church of Bladenboro, NC, donated funds to the Southeastern Health Foundation to purchase two Kangaroo Boards which are used as Neonatal Intensive Care emergency response kits. Bladen County Released Time, a non-denominational, non-profit has new goals and great needs for the new year. “The needs are near and dear to our hearts,” Dean Hilton, a board member of Bladen County Released Time stated. Shoeboxes loaded up to change lives

Monday may have been one of the busiest days for the local Central Drop Off site for Operation Christmas Child at Fellowship Bible Church in Elizabethtown. Bladen and Columbus County residents helped pack boxes with presents for children in other countries to enjoy for Christmas. Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child is a mission many participate in. The mission has grown since it first started in the 1990’s after Dave Cooke, a father of four from Wrexham, North Wales, saw the horror of abandoned children in Romanian orphanages on the news and asked friends to help fill a truck with toys to drive to the children’s home in Romania. Some Churches in Bladen County have been doing this for the ninth year in a row by feeding others on Turkey Day.  Bladenboro and Elizabethtown Church members have been working together to feed hundreds each year. Local Church Gives Thanksgiving Baskets

The Baldwin Branch Missionary Baptist Church was excited about the opportunity to provide food baskets to those in need just in time for Thanksgiving.  Members of the congregation, plus one guest, provided ninety (90) baskets to needy families of Bladen County via the Paul R. Brown Leadership Academy and Bladen County’s primary and middle schools.  The baskets held a complete Thanksgiving meal for a family of 5-8.  Ingredients for each basket were: A frozen turkey, stove top dressing, rice, sweet potatoes, Mac & Cheese, green beans, Jiffy Corn Bread mix, cake mix, icing, sugar, Kool-Aid, gravy and cranberry sauce.  This 12-year ministry was incredibly gratifying and appreciative by the school personnel …..

Christmas is just over a month away, but many folks have been preparing all year for a special Christmas mission project. Bladen and Columbus County citizens have been plugging away to spread the love with Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child.
