A Youth Leadership Summit is planned to take place on Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in Hickory. The event will invite high school students to learn about the opioid problem and discuss how they can help confront the issue at home. Bladen County Released Time, a non-denominational, non-profit has new goals and great needs for the new year. “The needs are near and dear to our hearts,” Dean Hilton, a board member of Bladen County Released Time stated. Monday may have been one of the busiest days for the local Central Drop Off site for Operation Christmas Child at Fellowship Bible Church in Elizabethtown. Bladen and Columbus County residents helped pack boxes with presents for children in other countries to enjoy for Christmas. Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child is a mission many participate in. The mission has grown since it first started in the 1990’s after Dave Cooke, a father of four from Wrexham, North Wales, saw the horror of abandoned children in Romanian orphanages on the news and asked friends to help fill a truck with toys to drive to the children’s home in Romania. Some Churches in Bladen County have been doing this for the ninth year in a row by feeding others on Turkey Day. Bladenboro and Elizabethtown Church members have been working together to feed hundreds each year. This year was no exception. Randy Andrews, Pastor of Open Door Ministries said, “When you can look past denominational lines and have a kingdom attitude, that’s when you can start getting stuff done.” Together the churches handed out 475 plates with a bountiful blessings of food and love. The Baldwin Branch Missionary Baptist Church was excited about the opportunity to provide food baskets to those in need just in time for Thanksgiving. Members of the congregation, plus one guest, provided ninety (90) baskets to needy families of Bladen County via the Paul R. Brown Leadership Academy and Bladen County’s primary and middle schools. The baskets held a complete Thanksgiving meal for a family of 5-8. Ingredients for each basket were: A frozen turkey, stove top dressing, rice, sweet potatoes, Mac & Cheese, green beans, Jiffy Corn Bread mix, cake mix, icing, sugar, Kool-Aid, gravy and cranberry sauce. On Sunday, October 15th, Maggie Lewis was selected the 2017 Senior Female of the Year at Baldwin Branch Missionary Baptist Church. She was born in Elizabethtown, NC and is the third oldest of fifteen children. Ms. Lewis enjoys having a good time with her family. While growing up she was very helpful to her parents in assisting and caring for her younger brothers and sisters. Last year, on today’s date, Hurricane Matthew brought many local residents to their knees. Two people lost their lives and the flood waters devoured homes in the area. Erin Smith A grave belonging to a Confederate soldier was reported to have been disturbed last week at Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church. The church which dates back to 1845, is located in the Council community of Bladen County on NC 87. According to reports, a man was cutting the grass at Mt. Horeb Presbyterian Church when he saw that a grave had been disturbed and called the police. The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. According to reports, deputies arrived to find a hole on top of the grave that measured about 3-feet in width. Authorities are not sure if anything is missing from the soldier’s grave. Anyone …..
WASHINGTON – For the past three years, Greensboro, N.C. pastor Reverend John Cao has worked to build 16 schools for impoverished ethnic minorities near the China-Myanmar border. This year, Rev. Cao began to face pressure from the Chinese government, including travel restrictions and the forced closure of some schools. He was arrested for “illegal border crossing” on March 5th, despite previously having traveled between Myanmar and China without trouble as part of his humanitarian work. This week, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) and Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-04), who serve together on the Congressional-Executive Commission on China, wrote Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to ask that the State Department prioritize Rev. Almost one year later, there are victims of Hurricane Matthew who still remain housed in hotels or other forms of temporary housing. The Bladen Charge held their Revival called Love Out Loud this past weekend. Besides a time of coming together in worship, the churches of the Bladen Charge performed service projects during the weekend. Congregations spent Sunday morning in prayer for the county’s schools and the youth as they prepared to return to school on Monday. Dublin First Baptist Church prayed for their youth, teachers, staff and schools on Sunday. They also traveled to Dublin Primary School and prayed in front of the building. NASHVILLE, NC – Today, a group of 30 offenders from North Carolina state prisons began a four-year classroom journey at Nash Correctional Institution they hope ends not only with a college degree but with an opportunity to assist their fellow inmates. The North Carolina Field Ministry Program kicked off with a convocation ceremony in the prison’s gymnasium. Thirty long-term prison inmates will begin seminary classes with a convocation event, launching the new NC Field Minister Program, a partnership between the Department of Public Safety, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) and the non-profit ministry Game Plan for Life.The Field Minister program is a four-year, college-level educational program that will allow inmates to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Ministry, with a secondary emphasis in counseling and psychology.
