A kitchen fire at 148 Sunshine Road in White Oak left a home heavily damaged on Friday morning.

The home’s owner, Mary Cole, said she was preparing breakfast in the kitchen and after putting sausage on to cook, decided to fry chicken for supper. Cole said she placed some oil in a pot on the stove to heat to fry the chicken before stepping to the bedroom to talk with her husband.

Cole said, while she was speaking with her husband, she heard the smoke alarm go off. She said she walked back towards the kitchen and saw the fire.

“I yelled help me! Jimmy, help me!” said Cole.

She said her husband yelled at her to get out of the house. Both residents made it out safely and no injuries were reported.

The White Oak, Ammon, White Lake, Elizabethtown, and Tar Heel fire departments responded to the scene. They were joined by two Cumberland County fire departments from Cedar Creek and Beaver Dam. Bladen County Emergency Management, Bladen County EMS and the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office were also on the scene.

The Coles are staying with neighbors at this time.
