Springtime arrives March 20, less than two weeks and over the years, volunteers have planned numerous local events, many time fundraisers, to assist in various ways.  No different this year.

In no special order….

March 16th in Bladenboro a fundraiser is planned for Murray Hester.  BBQ-benefit will be held at Bladenboro Historical Building from 4-7 p.m.  A gun and grill raffle will be a part of the event.  Plates will be $7 each and donations are welcomed.

March 22nd at Colly Chapel Church, a fundraiser for Mikey Smith is planned.  He is fighting colon cancer.  Volunteers will be selling BBQ plates, $8 each from 10 a.m. until at the church.  Donations are accepted.  Pick up and delivery available for 5 or more plates.  Call 874-1179 or 874-0726.

Bladen Relay for Life team is sponsoring a couple of events.  First is Sunday, March 24th at Cape Fear Farmers Market beginning at 4 p.m.  All Cancer Survivors are encouraged to attend.  Then, according to Mary Williams, this year’s chairperson, the Annual Cancer Walk will be held April 27th at the Elizabethtown Middle School Athletic Field from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.  Numerous exciting new opportunities are available, including ‘Road to Recovery’, a new service where volunteers provide transportation for cancer victims.  All are encouraged to attend and support.

And, mark your calendar for Saturday, April 6th, 7-10 a.m. Dublin Boy Scouts Troop 622 is sponsoring a Pancake & Sausage breakfast at Allen Brothers Clubhouse, 3062 Cabbage Road, Bladenboro.  Donations will be accepted.

Bladen We Care has announced dates and times for their Annual Gala and Golf Tournament.  Tickets for the Gala are available from board members, including me, and other volunteers as well…$100 per couple. The Gala will be held April 5th at Cape Fear Vineyard and the Bladen We Care Golf Tournament is set for Thursday, April 25th at The Vineyard Golf Course, White Lake.  Proceeds from both events assist Bladen residents ‘falling thru the cracks’ in our health care delivery system.

And there are no doubt other functions across the county.  People helping people….No one does it better than Bladen County Volunteers.

Remember the Hee Haw song…If it weren’t for bad news there’d be not news at all.  Not so in Bladen…bad news yes, but more good than bad.  I love living in Bladen, despite the efforts of some to ‘tear down’.
