It’s been a while since I have witnessed so much excitement about Dixie Youth baseball. Two local teams headed to Louisiana, one leaving in the next day or so and another a week later.

The Bladen County Dixie Majors team begins play Saturday, July 27 and hopefully will be playing thru Wednesday, the 31st. Contributions to the team are still needed. Check their Facebook page. Les Hill is the coach.

Elizabethtown Dixie Youth Minors team begins play in Ruston, La., the following week, August 2. Kyle Bostic is the coach. Everyone is invited to a ‘Night at the Park” (Leinwand’s Park), Saturday, July 27th from 6-10 p.m. for a huge party. Music provided by The Pink Slip Band.

Both teams deserve our support, financially and in other ways. Mark Gillespie is collecting funds for both teams. Mark has long been associated with Dixie Youth events. He is manager at the local ABC store, easy to locate. Funds for the Bladen County team need to be delivered in the next day or so, hopefully before they ‘hit the road’.

Bladen County girls softball teams completed play the past weekend. Their competition ends at the state level. What a year???

Weather still a big story. Hot again today, but cooler weather is promised for later tonight and tomorrow.

Checking averages for July and August for Bladen County:

July … average high 89 and low is 67 and 5.5 inches of rain;

August … average high 87 and low is 65 with 5.8 inches of rain.

This has been an unusual few weeks, weatherwise.

“All kids need is a little help, a little hope and somebody who believes in them.” Magic Johnson

A good coach will make their players see what they can be rather than what they are.

If at first you don’t succeed. … Try doing what the coach told you to do the first time.
