Bladen County Schools Prek, Kindergarten, First, Second, Third, and Fourth-grade will return for some in-person learning on September 14, 2020. Valerie Newton, Public Relations Officer with Bladen County Schools, made calls recently to say that Bladen County Schools are looking forward to welcoming students back to school beginning Monday.

Newton explained schools developed an A-B schedule for students to return. Students identified as A day will attend school in-person on Mondays and Tuesdays; students identified as B day will attend school in-person on Thursdays and Fridays. All students will participate in remote-only learning on Wednesdays.

The state provided face masks for students, but we ask that you send your child to school with a mask on their first day. School administrators will distribute additional masks to students throughout the week.

Valarie continued saying, “To ensure the safety and well-being of everyone, parents will not be allowed to escort their child into the building during morning drop-off. We know this may cause uneasiness among our youngest students so we encourage parents to talk with their child before-hand, providing words of assurance.”

Breakfast and lunch will be served to every student each day they are in school. Bladen County Schools will also continue to provide meals through the USDA meal program.

In closing, Newton reminds parents to check your student’s book bag or take-home folder on Monday and Thursday. Schools will be sending home a bus rider transportation form that will need to be returned to the school office the following day.

BladenOnline spoke with educators and asked how parents may help the Schools for in-person learning.

Parents may offer to provide transportation for their students. By offering transportation for students, parents will allow the schools’ busses to be used for students who do not have transportation.

Also, there is a need for substitute teachers.

A substitute teacher is an on-call teacher who substitutes for a full-time teacher when they are ill, taking vacation or maternity leave, or will be absent for other reasons. Substitute teachers can often choose to work on a part-time basis or accept longer-term openings that become available.

Each Local Education Agency (LEA) sets its own educational requirements for substitute teachers. Bladen County Substitute Teacher requirements are High School Diploma or GED (Transcript must reflect hours completed and Grade Point Average) and the completion of the online Substitute Training Course ($49.00 fee) with a composite passing score of 80%.

If you have a valid, current teaching certificate, you are exempt from taking the online Substitute Training Course; however, you MUST provide a copy of your valid, current teaching certificate to the Bladen County Schools Human Resources Department.

The Effective Substitute Teacher Online Training Course is $49.00 per person and can be purchased online with a Visa or MasterCard. The course is designed by APP-Garden and delivered by Cook Education Consultants, Inc. You must complete the online Effective Substitute Teacher Training Course with a composite passing score of 80%. You will be required to upload the certificate of completion to your Bladen County Schools application. If you have a valid, current teaching certificate, you are exempt from taking the online Substitute Training Course; however, you MUST provide a copy of your valid teaching certificate to the Bladen County Schools Human Resources Department.

Lastly, be understanding and supportive. The COVID-19 Pandemic has been stressful for everyone. Teachers and school staff members have had to learn new techniques and technologies and deal with pandemic stress. Remember, parents, students, and schools are a team with the challenge of successful education during all of life’s stresses.
