Bladen County commissioners meet at 6:30 p.m. today…
Elizabethtown town officials will hold a ground breaking for an expansion to Leinwand Park at 3 p.m. today.  The festivities will be held on the grounds behind the Municipal Building at 805 West Broad Street.  The first phase of the project will be a skate park and soccer field improvements.  A second phase will include development of horseshoe courts, shuffleboard courts and improvements to the playground at the park. The Town received a NC Parks and Recreation grant (PARTF) of $215,000 and it was matched by the town…Everyone is invited.
Filing for the November Municipal elections is over….If my memory has not failed….5 of the 7 towns in the county will have more candidates than seats available….East Arcadia has 4 candidates and 4 seats available.  Tar Heel voters will select two their Town Commissioners by a ‘write-in” vote on election day.
The British Open concludes today, weather permitting…..Play had to be extended by a day due to rain and wind on Friday and Saturday….Jordan Spieth continues his quest for golf’s grand slam.  The 21 year old is the reigning Masters and U.S Open champ.  At the beginning of play today, he was a shot back of Jason Day, Louis Oosihuizen and amateur Paul Dunne.

Zack Mears ‘mowed down’ the opposition yesterday.  Mears pitched a  complete game, gave up three hits and struck out 13 Burgaw batters in the second round of the NC Dixie Youth Majors.  The game was played in Cerro Gordo.
The Bladen County 12-Under girls finished third in state play in Williamston.. The locals lost 16-6 yesterday…Overall, a very good  tournament for the young ladies…
The 12-Under girls eked out a 14-13 win over Randolph County….and the NC Dixie Belles played in Burgaw…Lumberton pounded Reidsville 15-4.  Three Bladen County girls play on the Lumberton team….
