Thoughts While Shaving

For some unknown reason I went to bed last night with 5th Sunday Night Singing on my mind … Anyone remember? A group of folks who enjoyed singing, soloist, quartets, choirs from any number of churches in the county, all getting together on the 5th Sunday night and sing. Just folks that enjoyed singing or listening to others sing … I was a youngster, maybe 10 to 12 years old … must have been in the mid to late 40s. Lasted several years…

There was an emcee, do not recall his name. He had the sound equipment. I have no idea why I thought of it. Many attended that never participated, over than listening … Area churches would invite the group to use their church for future events … Some of the churches that participated … Oak Grove FWB, Zion HIll Baptist, Whites Creek Baptist, Hickory Grove, and many more.

There was a family of Rayfields from the White Oak area, Dove families from Oak Grove area and my family from Zion HIll … Uncle LeRoy Brown, Ernest Hester, my dad, Robert J. Hester, and my cousin, Thyra Brown, played the piano … plus others…

Anyone else remember, kinda ‘fizzled out’ sometime near the end of World War II, maybe a little later … There was not much competition for time … No TV that I recall…

Well, I know it happened, cause I was at most…

It’s Sunday, church time. If you don’t plan to attend, check out Facebook … numerous local churches provide the service … Many are back to a regular type service, some at various other stages of returning to a normal service…

Some of our family had a party in Smithfield yesterday … At least 3 celebrated birthdays in recent days … and we partied with them…
