Sandra CainSandra Cain has been named Bladen County director for North Carolina Cooperative Extension effective Sept. 1. An Extension agent with more than 30 years experience, she has served as interim county Extension director since May 1.

Dr. Travis Burke, interim director of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and associate dean of NC State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Greg Martin, Bladen County manager, announced the appointment this week.

Cain has worked with Cooperative Extension since 1984, first as a 4-H agent in Hoke County and then as family and consumer sciences agent in Bladen County from 2002 to present. Over the course of her career, she has served as an interim county Extension director on several occasions.

Cain holds two degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro: a bachelor of science degree in home economics (1982) and a master’s in home economics education and business (1990).

She has won several state-level awards for her accomplishments as an agent, including the 2006 N.C. State Grange Search for Excellence Award. She also has been a part of an award-winning periodical publications team.

According to Extension’s Southeast District Director Keith Walters, Cain brings strong skills in educational programming and leadership to the county Extension director position. “We look forward to Sandra providing leadership for the Bladen County Extension staff and joining our administrative team in the Southeast District. She has served Bladen County as a family and consumer science agent for the last 13 years, and her extensive knowledge of the county, her programming skills and leadership ability will enhance the service provided to the citizens of Bladen County.”

North Carolina Cooperative Extension is an educational outreach of NC State and North Carolina A&T State universities, in partnership with county governments and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Its programs focus on agriculture, food and 4-H youth development.
