The 2016 Junior Beta Club Convention in Greensboro started Monday and many students from Bladen County are in attendance along with our local adults that dared to tag along.

Bladenboro Middle School, Clarkton School of Discovery, Tar Heel Middle School, East Arcadia and Elizabethtown Middle  Schools are all in attendance with students representing our communities well with their skills at the Convention. There are also Bladen County students taking part who attend Columbus Charter School and Harrells Christian Academy and they, too, are showing off their talents.

Autumn Brisson, a student at Clarkton School of Discovery, is helping lead the ceremonies as the Junior Beta Club vice-president. The first day of the convention brought many reasons for Bladen County to cheer.

The day started with the Group Talent Competition. Clarkton School of Discovery, Harrells Christian Academy and Columbus Charter School all had Bladen County students on stage for the event. CSD and Columbus Charter School made it into the top five for the second round.

Next was the Songfest where East Arcadia, Clarkton School of Discovery and Harrells Christian Academy competed. CSD students made it into the top five in the Songfest competition as well.

Tar Heel Middle, Bladenboro Middle and Elizabethtown Middle schools held out for the Special Talent Competition. Winners for the special talent rounds will be announced on Tuesday.

Some competitions announced winners on Monday afternoon. The Convention floor was filled with excitement as some of our local students were announced as winners! Bladenboro Middle School students are brining home ribbons. Cadee Bryan won first place in the Sculpture competition. Kailey Gause won second place in Pastels and Alexis Allen won second place in jewelry. Columbus Charter School student Arianna Long, who is from Bladen County, placed third place with her sculpture.

Autumn Brisson, Alyssa Bell, Cybil Campbell and Olivia Sholar from Clarkton School of Discovery sang the National Anthem at the First General Session. Then, Clarkton School of Discovery students performed for the second time in the top five of the Songfest and the Group Talent competitions. Columbus Charter School also performed again in the top five for the Group Talent.

Bladenboro Middle School, Elizabethtown Middle School and Clarkton School of Discovery sponsors were awarded the Golden Key Award for increasing their attendance from last year to this year by at least 10 percent. Bladenboro Middle School was recognized for their victory in the National Beta Club competition last year in photography.

Tuesday will be the end of the Junior Beta Club Convention and a new council will be announced. This year, two local students are candidates for the new council. Andrew Cahn from Clarkton School of Discovery is running for Chaplain and Savannah-Grace Jones from Columbus Charter School is running for Vice-President.
