The White Lake Board of Commissioners met in regular session Tuesday evening.  Dawn Maynard, Director of the White Lake/Elizabethtown Chamber of Commerce made a surprise presentation tonight to the Board. She announced that the Town of White Lake has been awarded “Chamber Member of the Year”. “This is the first time in the history of the Chamber that a Town has been named as Member of the Year”, stated Mrs. Maynard. She thanked the Board and staff for all of their support and help over the years with many projects. The award will be presented at the annual banquet in June.

A Public Hearing was held to hear public comments regarding HDJ Properties, LLC. Zoning Map Amendment request to rezone property located at 42 Lennondale Dr., 22 Winstead, 33, 41, 51 Winstead, 78 Winstead, and 72 Winstead on White Lake Dr. from R1 (Permanent Residential) and R-1A (Permanent Residential) to R-2 (Recreational Residential). Jeff Corbett was the only citizen who made comments. He is in favor of the project.

A second public hearing was held regarding ​HDJ Properties, LLC appli​cation​ for a special use permit  to construct six (6) duplex buildings – (twelve total units for two-family dwellings) at 291 White Lake Dr. ​Jeff Corbett spoke in favor of the project stating he sees it as positive for White Lake as it will add to the tax base which will help keep property taxes low. 

In regards to all of the HDJ Properies requests, Council approved all as presented. Requests included the Zoning Map Amendment; 2 sub-division applications; a variance request to reduce the minimum right-of-way width requirement for a 20’ private street from 45 feet to 25 feet to accommodate a single-family subdivision on White Lake Dr.​;​ as well as the Special Use Permit. Mr. Dean Hilton stated they plan to get started right away on Phase 1 of the project, the duplex buildings on the old Potter’s Seafood site. The second phase will be a 4 to 5 single family dwelling subdivision ​on Summer Walk Lane.

The third phase will consist of 10 single family dwellings on Lennondale and Winstead properties. The Board thanked Hilton for all of his work and the company’s ​investment in making improvements to White Lake. “All three projects will be a great asset to the Town and will certainly clean up that area of the Lake,” said Mayor Womble.

In administrative matters the Board approve Tax Releases ($656.00); Utility Releases ($513.35); accept​ed​ the LGFCU’s financing proposal to finance the police vehicle​; ​and appoint​ed​ Dean Hilton to serve as an in-town member on the White Lake Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustment​.

​Police Chief Bruce Smith ask​ed​ the Board to reclassify Sergeant Mike Salmon​’s position to a Lieutenant position to more realistically reflect the current duties and responsibilities of Sergeant Salmon and include as special requirements that the position require a minimum of eight (8) years as a law enforcement officer, completion of the North Carolina Justice Academy Criminal Investigation Certificate Program and obtain an Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate.  The reclassification would have no financial impact on the 2015/16 Fiscal Year budget and would remain at a Grade 18.

The Board approved the request as presented.​

The Board adjourned the meeting tonight to March 29th at 6:00 p.m. to hold a workshop to discuss the water quality of the lake.
