Pait, who doesn’t have health insurance, was admitted to the hospital June 20 with pneumonia. His conditioned worsened and had lung surgery July 2. He remains in intensive care at Cape Fear Valley in Fayetteville. A long recovery awaits as the bills mount.

2. Best way to prevent heat-related illnesses, according to the CDC, is drink plenty of water, stay somewhere cool, wear light clothing, and avoid sugar, alcohol and caffeine. Hmmm, got to have that coffee.

Signs of heat exhaustion include paleness, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, fainting, muscle cramps, heavy sweating and nausea or vomiting. Signs of heat stroke include extremely high body temperature; red, hot, dry skin with no sweating; rapid, strong pulse; throbbing headache; dizziness; nausea; confusion and unconsciousness. Heat stroke can be life threatening.

3. Effective July 1, three Bladen County schools and the district Technology Department had new phone numbers. Here are the new numbers, all 910 area codes: Bladen Lakes Primary is 247-4608, East Arcadia School is 247-4609, East Bladen High School is 247-4610, and the district Technology Department is 247-4411.
