The Rotary Club is a civic organization with the motto, “Service Above Self”. After attending the Rotary Day at the Boys & Girls Homes of North Carolina this past Sunday, February 12th, 2017 some of the Elizabethtown Rotary Club members found serving others is what the homes were founded on as well.
The special day started with a worship service at the Leamon Rogers Memorial Chapel, followed by a lunch and a tour of the grounds. Rotary Clubs from around North Carolina traveled to Lake Waccamaw to celebrate the non-profits accomplishments for youth and to to take advantage of the opportunity to give back.
Dr. Don Peacock spoke about his grandfather, the Boys & Girls Homes founder, Mr. A.D. Peacock. According to Dr. Peacock the homes were made possible because people helped people.
Gary Faircloth, President of the non-profit said currently the Boys & Girls Homes assist 224 children and 40 students. Since 2008, the children in need of assistance has increased 25% due to the recession and drug abuse problems.
According to Faircloth, Rotary has given over 1.6 million dollars to the Boys & Girls Homes of Lake Waccamaw. Sunday, the Rotary Clubs in attendance increased the amount with donations totaling $17,358.67.
