Cool breezes and overcast skies couldn’t dampen the spirits of parents and children as they came to the 11th annual Kids Appreciation Day event at the Elizabethtown Town Hall.  Squeals of delight and laughter echoed across the soccer field as children enjoyed Bounce houses and games.

Children of all ages could be seen on the lawn talking to Bladen County Schools’ “Buster the Bus,” enjoying games, and talking with police officers and fire fighters.  Activities included pony rides, sack races, a swing, and Bounce Houses. There were displays of fire trucks, an ambulance and an Elizabethtown Police Department patrol car. There was also a basketball toss and a homerun derby.

The event was first held in 2006 and is a way for officers to build a rapport with the community, according to Lt. D. Cheshire. “We want the kids to be able to trust us and its a way the officers and the Police Department can give back to the community,” he said.

Jonathan McConnell was enjoying the Ace Wrecker swing. He said coming out to the Kids Appreciation Day was a way to have fun. Mrs. McConnell said she and her son come to the event each year.
