Bladen County students performed in many division at the North Carolina State Senior Beta Club Convention in Greensboro. Taking time out from other commitments like classes and sports practices reaped rewards for the local students and schools.

Amy Lutrell, Club Sponsor, addressed the club members saying, “You all have been some of the most kind, respectable and amazing people.”

Ruthann Parker, Senior Beta Club Sponsor from Harrell’s Christian Academy, gave her final speech in her position. She also announced three scholarship awards for $1,000 each to three North Carolina students.

Parker closed by reminding those in attendance, “You are created for a purpose and I’m so honored to represent North Carolina. Spread out and share those gifts and talents.”

Genia Hester, from Elizabethtown Christian Academy was named the NC Junior Beta Sponsor earlier this week and served at the Senior Beta Convention.

Following are the awards East Bladen High School announced they won during the convention. Peyton  Fell and Jackson Bostic won fourth place in Special Talent – solo, duo, trio; Maggie first place in Division I Spanish; Weslyn fifth place Division I Speech; Kelis Johnson second place Division II Agri-science; Ethan fifth place Division II Sculpture and in Drawing; Devin received third place in Division I Woodworking; Sydney won second place in Division I photography; and Cheyenne placed third place in Division I jewelry.

East Bladen also gave a special thank you to their sponsors Ms Stoneham, Mrs. West and Mrs. Willington for their hard work and dedication.

Harrell’s Christian Academy performed in the Preforming Art Group Talent competition and placed.  The school placed with their skit performance. They also performed in Songfest and placed.

HCA announced on their social media page, “Senior Beta is Oklahoma bound!!! They placed 2nd in Campaign Skit, 3rd in Show Choir, 3rd in Character Skit & 5th in Group Talent!!”

HCA also received the following awards: Champion Woodworking, second place Drawing Division 1, third place French and third place Short Story. They received third place Science Division 1, fourth place Onsite Painting and second place Freshman Problem Solving.

West Bladen High School preformed a group talent show, which was a tribute to Bladen County native, the late Trooper Kevin Conner. However, they did not place in the top five in the group competition due to some technical issues, according to Beta officials.

West Bladen’s Edgardo Lara won first place in the Photography and Walter Baxley received second Place in Social Studies.

Bladen had two officer candidates, Khalil McKoy from East Bladen for President and William David deAndrade from Harrells Christian Academy Candidate for Secretary. Even though both local students campaigned for their offices well they were not elected. Samuel Mogollon from Liberty Christian Academy was elected to the office of President and Emma Alcorn from Chase High School was elected to the office of Secretary.
