The Bladen County Board of Education at its Monday meeting voted not to require face coverings for students and staff for the next month.

The vote was 5-4, according to a release from Bladen County Schools. The Board is required to vote on the policy every month as required by legislation in Senate Bill 654.

The board voted Aug. 20 during an emergency meeting to make masks universally mandatory while indoors. That decision reversed an Aug. 9 vote to make masking optional for students and staff.

The mandatory masking was “necessary due to the high level of transmission from the Delta variant of COVID-19 in our community and in an effort to keep students and staff members in school for in-person learning,” according to a news release from the school system in August.
