DUBLIN – Bladen Community College graduated its largest class of Practical
Nursing students in a pinning ceremony on July 25.

BCC Board of Trustees chair Dennis Troy and college executive vice president
Jeff Kornegay provided greetings to the 28 graduates and others in attendance.

Michelle Thompson, a past graduate of the program and now registered nurse,
gave words of encouragement and congratulations as the guest commencement speaker. Thompson encouraged graduates to “be the one” to show care and compassion as they step forward into their careers.

BCC student Ashton Goins received the Professional Nursing Award for
exemplifying the best role model of the professional nurse as voted upon by her
peers.

The Florence Nightingale Award was presented to William Ryan McBride. The award is given to a graduating student who demonstrates combined excellence in theory and clinical application. Practical Nurse Education Program Faculty vote by secret ballot for the recipient of this award.

Lastly, the Bladen Community College Practical Nurse Education Outstanding Student Nurse Award was given to a graduating student who achieves the highest Grade Point Average in the class.” This year, it was a tie between students Goins and Whitney Jackson.

During the pinning ceremony, students receive a nursing lapel pin and a lamp
which symbolizes the gas lamp carried by British nurse Florence Nightingale as
she made nightly rounds of wounded soldiers during the 1853-1856 Crimean War. Students also recite the Florence Nightingale Pledge.

Bullard, Tansheika Chavez, Nicole Cook, Charlie Antonio Dimas Cruz, Tonyese
“Gia” Galloway-Velazquez, Ashton Goins, Letia Hammond, Trinity H. Hood,
Ceaarow Hooper, Krisenda Shanell Humphrey, Whitney Jackson, Mary Margaret
Jacobs, Robyn Loclear, Summer J. Locklear, Deanna Michelle Long, Airean
Lowry, Marlina Martinex, Ryan McBride, Lashona Denora Miller, Kristen
Michelle Pittmean, Hannah S. Porter, Andrew R. Rzatkiewicz, Jessica Lynn
Smiling, Simone Spaulding, Derwin Strickland, Jr. and Ciaria Thomas.
