DUBLIN – Bladen Community College will honor men and women who have served the country in the armed forces during a Veterans Day special celebration on Thursday, November 8, at 11 AM in the college auditorium (building 9).

Guest speaker, U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Leroy F. Atkins, will address the assembly. SFC Atkins enlisted in the Army in 1987 and served until his retirement in 2007. His first duty station was 2nd Chemical Battalion, Fort Hood, TX, and then on to the 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC, where he deployed to Desert Storm and Desert Shield with the 307th MED BN. SFC

SFC Atkins awards and decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (6OLC), and the Army Achievement Medal (8OLC) to name a few of the many he has earned.  He has been working as a JROTC Instructor at East Bladen High School in Elizabethtown, NC since retirement and as adjunct professor of psychology at Methodist University in Fayetteville for several years.  Atkins holds a Bachelor of Psychology from Saint Martians University and a Masters of Psychology from Webster University. A native of Emporia, Virginia, SFC Atkins is married to Dr. Karen L.E. Atkins and has two children.

As part of the Veterans Day tribute, the college will host an exhibit of military artifacts and memorabilia. The public is invited to hear Atkins speak and view the military exhibit.
