Frost hit Bladen County after weeks of unseasonable weather last night. The temperature in Bladen County was still below the freezing mark at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Blueberry farmers have been hard at work already this year, but last night may have been the hardest work yet for them. When blueberries sprout and start to grow, frost is one of their worst enemies according to some local blueberry farmers.

The farmers had to guard against the frost last night by freezing their berry bushes. The process for the farmers is long and time consuming, but it works.

Water has to be continuously sprayed on the fruit bearing bushes. The bushes freeze and the farmers keep spraying their planted products until well after the temperatures have moved above freezing and the blueberry bushes thaw out.

Some local blueberry farmers have worked all through the night making sure the favored berry bushes will still produce a good crop this season.

As always, many kudos to our Farmers!
