Here were some of the stories making news in Bladen County in 1973:
• Two members of the Carvers Creek 4-H Club, Johnny Parks and Earl Miller, were state 4-H winners and received a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress.
• Two ladies won honors in the Lady’s Blueberry Golf Tournament held at White Lake Golf Course. Gladys DeVane won low putter honors and Hope Campbell won the longest drive contest.
• Cliff Hester, East Bladen High School athlete, was presented the Lt. Thomas Swann Memorial Award as the Most Dedicated Athlete for the second straight year.
