Here were some of the stories making news in Bladen County in 1973:

• Mrs. Badie Spaulding Crenshaw retired after 38 years of teaching in Bladen County schools.

• The Bladen County Board of Commissioner set the tax rate for Bladen County at $1.60 per $100 of valuation.

• Bladen County tobacco farmers responded in a survey by 603 farms designated 5,361,971 pound to choice market towns. Of the total pounds designated, Clarkton will receive 35 percent, Whiteville 24 percent, Lumberton 22 percent, Chadbourn 9 percent, Fairmont 7 percent, Fair Bluff, Tabor City and Fayetteville would receive approximately 1 percent.
