Here were some of the stories making news in Bladen County in 1973:

• Captain Billy Causey of Bladenboro received the Seventh Annual Avco/AWA Helicopter Heroism Award. Causey was selected as the result of four successful rescue operations he led during the sieges of An Loc and Loc Ninh by armorled North Vietnamese forces.

• Elizabethtown and Clarkton Jaycees had a donkey basketball game at the Elizabethtown Junior High Gym.

• The Elizabethtown Jaycees received a new ambulance.
