Staff report

As the warmer months approach, mosquitoes buzz, bringing with them the risk of various diseases. Protecting yourself and your loved ones from these pests is crucial. Bladen County Health and Human Services Agency reminds residents about protection against mosquitoes.

Choose the Right Insect Repellent

The first line of defense against mosquitoes is an effective insect repellent. Look for products registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which guarantees their safety and effectiveness, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Key active ingredients to look for include DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE), Para-menthane-diol (PMD), and 2-undecanone. Utilize the EPA’s search tool online to find the repellent that best fits your needs.

Safeguarding Children

When it comes to children, take extra precautions. Dress them in long sleeves and pants, use mosquito netting over strollers and carriers, and always follow the repellent label instructions. Be aware that OLE and PMD are not recommended for children under 3 years old. Avoid applying repellent to their hands, eyes, mouth, and irritated skin. For facial application, adults should first apply the repellent to their hands and then gently apply it to the child’s face.

General Tips for Everyone

Adhere strictly to the product’s label instructions and reapply the repellent as directed. Avoid using repellent under clothing, and if combining sunscreen with repellent, apply the sunscreen first. Although the effectiveness of natural repellents not registered with the EPA is unknown, choosing an EPA-registered repellent is the best way to ensure effectiveness.

Enhance Your Wardrobe with Permethrin

For added protection, treat your clothing and gear with 0.5% permethrin or purchase permethrin-treated items. This insecticide not only kills mosquitoes but also repels them and can remain effective even after multiple washes. Follow the instructions carefully when applying permethrin to items and remember never to apply it directly to your skin. Watch informative videos about permethrin to ensure proper application.

Fortify Your Home

Finally, make your living space a mosquito-free zone. Install and maintain screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes outside. Use air conditioning if possible and remove any standing water around your home, as mosquitoes lay eggs near water. Weekly, make sure to empty, cover, or discard anything that collects water such as buckets, planters, and trash containers.
