The Bladen County Water Department notified Bladen County residents in the Lisbon area on Thursday that officials would be flushing hydrants over the next few days.

Bladen County Manager Greg Martin had an update regarding the water on Friday. He stated in an email, “As you are aware, the Code Red Reporting System was utilized yesterday to notify residents of hydrant flushing in the Lisbon area to remove discolored water in the system.”

Martin continued, “Discolored water can occur when natural minerals that exist in well water react to the addition of chlorine which is required for disinfection. It is unfortunate but a natural occurrence of the process which forms sediment in the system. While this is not normally a problem, this sediment can get stirred up when a large volume of water is used, for instance in emergency situations.”

He added, “We deeply regret the inconvenience and frustration this is causing for customers and we are making every effort to resolve this matter as quickly as possible.”

The Water Department stated in their notification, “Thanks for your patience. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
