A staff report

Bladen County’s Babe Ruth 13U all-star team finished 2nd place in the DYB Tournament on the weekend of July 9th,1989. The district tournament was held in Wilmington which was also the district who won the 13U tournament.

The roster for the Babe Ruth Bladen County 13U All Stars were Jeremy Evans, Jason Hardin, Kory Hair, Garick West, Erik Martin, Pete Nichlous, Bradley Singletary, J.D. Medows, Rod Godwin, Robert Moore, Jarmar Moore, John Henry Pope, Justin Smith and Milton McIntyre. The coaches were Anthony Hargrave and Stephen Evans. 

After dropping the first game to Burgaw 16-6 in the tournament, Bladen County stormed back to make the finals out of the loser’s bracket. Bladen won their next two games over East Piney Green of Jacksonville County 9-5 followed by a 12-5 Burgaw victory. 

The Burgaw and Bladen County game had to be finished on a Saturday morning after finishing five innings of the game the previous night.

Bladen County found themselves meeting Wilmington in the finals of the tournament. The result did not go the way the 13U Bladen squad wanted to be losing by a score of 7-2. Wilmington was undefeated coming into the final game and showed their dominance that they displayed all tournament against Bladen County. Despite the loss, Bladen County 13U all-star team showed a lot of grit on their way to the championship game.
