winter storm warningAs Winter Storm Jonas continues its trek northward, folks are waking up in Bladen County to a wintry mix falling across the are that should change over to freezing rain before ending this afternoon. The National Weather Service has placed Bladen County under a winter storm warning until 1 p.m. Friday.

New precipitation amounts of between three-quarters to one inch are forecast for Bladen County. This will make driving conditions treacherous, according to the National Weather Service.

Emergency Management officials remind folks that bridges and overpasses will get icy before roadways and to watch out for patches of black ice when driving.

The storm forced closures and delays across the area. All Bladen County Schools are closed on Friday for teachers and staff. Also closed are Whiteville City Schools and Columbus Charter School.

The East Bladen and West Bladen basketball games that were originally scheduled for Friday night were played on Thursday night instead. Check out our sports page for game results.

The freezing is predicted to change over to all rain later this afternoon, according to the National Weather Service office in Wilmington.

Winter is not over for Bladen County, though. A 50 percent chance of snow is forecast for Saturday with a 20 percent chance of snow on Saturday night.
