Brunswick Fire Department assistant chief and treasurer David Heath Porter was arrested Monday on embezzlement and obtaining property by false pretense, the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office said.

Porter, 31, of Whiteville, was taken to the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Center and was released after posting a $235,000 bond, according to a news release from Sheriff Jody Greene. He was charged with 32 counts of embezzlement and 32 counts of obtaining property by false pretense.

Greene said an investigation began Aug. 8 after the Brunswick Fire Department’s Board of Directors reported missing funds.
