A primary election will be needed for some Bladen County races, including for both the Republican and Democratic nomination for sheriff, as candidate filing closed at noon Friday.

Incumbent Sheriff Jim McVicker will be challenged by Gary S. Edwards for the Republican nomination, according to the candidate list released by the Bladen County Board of Elections. On the Democratic side, former deputy Hakeem Brown and Guy W. Childress will vie for the nomination. McVicker defeated Brown in a hotly contested race four years ago. Childress filed Friday morning.

The primary is scheduled May 17 and the general election is set for Nov. 8.

A primary will be needed to determine nominations for the Board of Education. Harfel Davis filed Friday morning that put four Democratic candidates on the ballot for three county-wide seats. Other Democrats are incumbents Cory Singletary and Vince Rozier along with Sophia Baxley.

On the Republican side for the Board of Education county-wide race, Steve Kwiatkowski, who  filed Friday, and Dennis R. Edwards will advance to the November election against the top three vote-getters from the Democratic primary.

The other race that will require a primary is Clerk of Superior Court where Republicans Jason Britt and Cristin Hursey will face off in May to see who goes against Democrat candidate Althea Dixon Weaver.

Elsewhere, Dawson Singletary filed Friday morning to challenge incumbent Charles Ray Peterson for the Republican nomination for the District 2 seat on the Board of Commissioners. There is no Democratic opposition.
