Nurses Week is May 6 through May 12 this year. On Tuesday, Cape Fear – Bladen Hospital held a Blessing of the Hands Ceremony to honor local nurses.

The Ceremony began with a welcome from Audra Bateman and a prayer led by Jennifer Maynard. Ashley Graham Jones lead the Nurses Pledge, and Dr. Teresa (Terri) Duncan read the Blessing of the Hands.

Zack Davis, a nurse at Cape Fear – Bladen Hospital, received the Daisy Award presented by Marsha Williamson and Jennifer Maynard. Daisy Award recipients are nurses that observe extraordinary compassionate care.

When accepting the award, Davis said, “I really do appreciate it. I have had a lot of teachers, and I really appreciate it.”

Amber Bordeaux gave the closing remarks stating, “A special thank you to each of the families that are represented here today. To the families of Ms. Penny Utterback and Ms. Ann Smith, thank you for sharing such awesome ladies with us.”

Utterback and Smith were two beloved Bladen County nurses that passed away this year. During the Ceremony, Tucker Bordeaux, an Eagle Scout Candidate from Troop 600, presented the hospital with a handmade bench with a plaque to remember and honor the two nurses’ services to the community.

Blessed Are These Hands

Blessed be these hands that…

have touched life.

Blessed be these hands that…

have felt pain.

Blessed be these hands that…

have embraced compassion.

Blessed be these hands that…

have been clenched in anger or withdrawn in fear.

Blessed be these hands that…

have cleaned beds and disposed of waste.

Blessed be these hands that…

have anointed the sick and offered blessings.

Blessed be these hands that…

grow stiff with age.

Blessed be these hands that…

have comforted the dying and held the dead.

We hold the future in these hands. Blessed be our hands, for they are the work of your hands, O Holy One. Go in peace. Serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Every year, National Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6th through May 12th. This annual celebration recognizes the dedication of nurses. Today is the last day of Nurses Week; however, everyday is a good day to show appreciation to the nurses who touch our lives with their healing hands.

Cape Fear – Bladen Hospital is located at 501 S. Poplar Street in Elizabethtown, North Carolina.
