The flooding in Kelly has continued to bring cause for concern according to officals on Wednesday. Centerville Baptist Church in the local community is not only serving as a shelter for those evacuated, but is also a hub for first responders needed in the area.

First responders from Bladen, Brunswick, and Union Counties along with the National Guard stationed at the church’s shelter went out on Wednesday asking residents to voluntarily evacuate. Some residents took their advice and let the emergency personnel take them to the local shelter.

The first responders from other counties have been in Bladen County since Monday helping out with the emergency needs. Kelly Fire Chief Kenneth Thornton said, “Everyone has been very helpful! Thanks to the local and out of town first responders I haven’t needed a thing. I’m also very grateful for Sheriff McVicker, who has been there for me during this whole time.”

According to Pastor Lamont Hemminger, as of Wednesday afternoon the church was sheltering about 15 people and providing food and a place of rest for around 100 first responders. “We are going to be here until the need ends.”

Anyone wanting to assist the shelter is asked to donate drinks, water, individually wrapped snacks, food items, and baby diapers and wipes.
