Spread the love

Clarkton_First_baptistIt’s been more than 60 years since Clarkton First Baptist Church dedicated its sanctuary on College Street.

On Sunday, April 24, the church will rededicate its upgraded worship area during its Homecoming service. The service will begin at 11 a.m. and be followed by a covered dish lunch in the fellowship hall.

The sanctuary has recently been repainted, had new carpet installed and the pews reupholstered. The pulpit area also has been enlarged and upgraded. New lighting was installed a couple of years ago.

“Our church was built by our love for God,” Rev. Mark Miller said. “We are excited about this event and look forward to sharing this special day and to thank God for First Baptist, and all of the blessings we have received, including all of the people who are and have been part of our church family.”

Plans for the current church building were adopted Jan. 5, 1950, according to church records. More than 8,000 hours of labor were donated by members during construction. The first worship service was held March 9, 1952 as construction continued. A dedication service for the building was held Nov. 28, 1954.

The church’s history dates to Feb. 16, 1884 with 16 charter members. The church was received into the Cape Fear Association in 1884, records show. The church then became a charter member of the Bladen Association in 1892. The church went back to the Cape Fear Association briefly, but rejoined the Bladen Association in 1924 and has removed with that organization since.
